When designing packaging, it’s important to draw inspiration from successful designs, and it’s also wise to learn from unsuccessful ones. We’ve covered custom packaging design mistakes in the past, and we have put together this article to go over a few errors to avoid in your own designs.

Three Custom Packaging Design Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Insufficient Proofreading – Some of the most common mistakes we see in product packaging are typographical errors. Many business owners have had packaging go into circulation with spelling, punctuation, or grammar mistakes. To avoid this error, make sure to have multiple people check the copy on your packaging, and check again when finalizing the graphics and layout.
  2. Uneven Negative Space – In visual design, the term “negative space” refers to the area of a frame without visual elements in it—in other words, the blank areas around the images and text. Another common mistake we see in custom packaging designs is uneven use of negative space. Make sure the elements of your design have a roughly equal amount of negative space around them, or otherwise the design will be hard to read.
  3. Poor Sizing – A third common mistake people make when it comes to custom packaging design is using containers that are not the right size for the products inside. If your packaging is too much larger than the products it contains, you customer will be disappointed by the product itself.
